Close to 63 million people in India have hearing impairment and many of them are from marginalized segments of society. There are few more alarming stats like approximately 1,500 youths of Chhattisgarh cannot speak/hear but are equally competitive in multiple fields.  What does all this have to do with tea?

Nukkad is not just a café but a story of people who have turned their weakness into extraordinary strengths and by performing regular duties like handling the cash counters, serving and helping with their indomitable spirit. Their smiles and positive energy is what makes the place truly unique. Founded in 2013 by Priyank Patel , Nukkad Teafe is not just another café, instead it is a social experiment of generosity. Situated in Raipur, capital of Chhattisgarh, Nukkad is the city’s favorite hangout place offering a cozy ambiance. Order their masala chai and lose yourself in the silence away from the bustle of crowds.

“I never wanted Nukkad to be a regular place where people just come, have tea and go away. I wanted people to experience Nukkad, know about the lives of other people around them, learn new things, etc.,” says Priyank.

if you think that’s not innovative enough, you should read about a few initiatives which will make you go WOW:

#Digital Detox – We offer discounts to our customers if they deposit their cellphones and focus on real conversations as long as they are @nukkad. The place firmly believes in the power of a great conversation over a cup of tea.

#Gyaadaan – A book exchange scheme where you bring a book and get another book for at least three days.

#Tea&Tones – A unique initiative offering free space to budding poets to come forward and recite their poetry.

#BillbyDil – Nukkad’s anniversary is a bill free day where you get no bills for the food you have. Instead the staff will put forward an empty envelop in which you can keep any amount of money you want to. Literally pay as you feel!

#Supermom’s Celebration – Bring your mom and get any one dish of your mom’s choice absolutely free.

These and many such innovative concepts make Nukkad the ‘go to place’ while you are in the city.  Nukkad is also in the process of opening outlets in three new cities and already have two outlets in the city.  Their vision to serve awesome tea along with creating job opportunities for the differently-abled is nothing less than inspiring.

Like we said before @Nukkad – having a good time is more than just drinking a steaming hot cup of tea. It means other plethora of activities like communicating in sign language with hearing and speech impaired staff members, enjoying books, reciting poems, meeting like-minded people, celebrating love, making new friends. We can definitely conclude ‘India runs on chai’ – Raipur runs on ‘Nukkad’

About the Founder: An engineer by profession, 31-year-old Priyank worked with MNCs for about five years before he got an opportunity to join a fellowship programme. This allowed him to work in rural India and help communities find solutions to different problems. After working in villages in Odisha, Maharashtra and Gujarat, Priyank felt there were not many young people in India working for social causes. He continued working with the NGO but decided he wanted to create a space where people, young ones especially, could meet, share ideas, form groups, start up social ventures and be inspired.

And doesn’t Nukkad do that perfectly!
